Uttara Choudhury

Consulting Editor

Uttara brings 20 years of journalistic experience to braingainmag.com. The magazine was launched under her watch and she has helped to expand its digital publishing capabilities while formerly driving its content.

She is currently Associate Editor (North America) at Network18’s news site Firstpost.com, where she covers breaking stories across America for India’s Network18 media group. She also provides commentary and analysis for India’s Businessworld magazine.

Prior to this Uttara was the North America correspondent for Mumbai’s Daily News and Analysis (DNA) newspaper. She has also worked as a special correspondent with Agence France Presse (AFP), in New Delhi. Uttara’s AFP stories were published in the International Herald Tribune and The New York Times, among others.

While running the Op-ed section at Business Standard and leading a team of journalists in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Calcutta, Uttara won the British Chevening Scholarship to study Journalism at the University of Westminster, London. During the Chevening programme, she worked on the foreign news and stock market desk at The Financial Times in London, where she enjoyed writing features for The Weekend Financial Times.

Uttara holds a BA degree in English Literature from Delhi University. When she gets away from pressure-cooker deadlines, Uttara goes out horse riding and loves show jumping and equestrian events. She supports a group for underprivileged women in the handicrafts sector in India’s north-eastern state of Assam.
